Women account for just 10.7% of STEM faculty across the IIT system in 2025. Taking a closer look at the seven legacy IITs: Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati and Roorkee, we see several of India's oldest engineering institutions fall below even this already low average. Women's representation is lowest at Kanpur (7.2%), followed by Kharagpur (9.2%), Madras (9.5%), and Guwahati (9.5%). At the upper end, Delhi (12.8%) and Roorkee (12.6%) are the only two legacy IITs above the IIT-wide average.
Discipline categories (Engineering & Technology, Science) reflect how individual faculty entries are tagged in the source data and are broad groupings, not a substitute for how each institute organizes its own departments. All figures are for VIDWAN-registered faculty and should be read as lower bounds on actual representation. See the documentation for a full account of the data's limitations.
